The Malacological Museum of the Franciscan Monastery in Makarska was founded in 1963. Jure Radic is responsible for this.
Today, the Museum can boast of a very attractive display of sea snails and shellfish that inhabit the Adriatic and the seas of the world. Today, our Museum is the most famous tourist destination with a malacological collection in Croatia. In addition to the rich malacological collection of Fr. Jure Radić, the museum also holds a very valuable herb of plants - species that inhabit Mount Biokovo and another smaller paleontological collection.
The Malacological Museum in Makarska is a museum of shells, and shellfish of different species of marine molluscs. As we mentioned at the beginning of writing, the Museum was created by the merits of Fr. Jure Radic, that is, his systematic and self-serving work, with the support and cooperation of many people, scientists, museum staff, collectors, and his good colleague and friend, Fr. Francis Carev.
The museum opened to the public on April 30, 1963. It is located in the old part of the Franciscan monastery, which is itself a protected cultural monument. The museum has a collection of over 3000 specimens of exposed shells, not only those found in the Adriatic, but also species of shells from the world's seas. The most interesting species of shells come from the tropical and subtropical seas, and they fascinate visitors with different and attractive colors and shapes.
