For many, this Museum is the most interesting in the whole of Croatia. The new Museum of Krapina Neanderthals is located near the world-famous site of Krapina Neanderthals "Hušnjakovo", together with which it makes a unique whole for the tour. The architecture of the Museum evokes the prehistoric habitat, that is, the semi-cave. With the volume, proportions and facade of today's building, the architect has tried in a special way to reproduce the former appearance of today's demolished Krapina semi-cave.
The entire building is carefully immersed in the surrounding landscape. The museum building is located between two hills, and is the only visible façade lined with Miocene yellow sand. The existing stream is channeled below the object (sinks), and then again springs in front of the museum, from where it was drawn so that visitors must cross it when visiting the Museum. The murmur of the water of this stream represents the flow of time, and crossing it over the stream symbolically signifies a return and a look into the distant past.
The interior of the Museum is constructed in concrete or artificial stone, with the aim of further enhancing the simulation of prehistoric habitat.
Glass rock is especially interesting, both for the elderly and the youngest guests of the Museum. A movie about the everyday life of a human being is projected on it. Thus, visitors can learn about the life of a human being by watching a movie.
This museum was first opened to the public in September 1971. The museum holdings initially contained a geological, paleontological and archaeological collection. The concept of the museum at that time was based on the collections and presentation of the rocks and minerals of Hrvatsko Zagorje, on the development of life on Earth, and on the development of man, with a special emphasis on the Krapina Neanderthal.
The site was represented by exposed Neanderthal bone casts, a fauna fossil collection and various stone tools. Of course, the collection was complemented by documentation of each discovery.
In its beginnings, first the Museum of Evolution was part of the Forest Improvement Fund of the municipality of Krapina, and later (in 1971) it was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Zagreb Forest Economy. The story gets another plot in 1977, when the organization "The site of the prehistoric man of Krapina" was founded, and in 1988, when the Museum became part of the Center for Culture, Arts and Information in Krapina.
It was not until 1993 that the Museum became the property of the Republic of Croatia. The new Krapina Neanderthal Museum has been built for 11 years and opened to the public on February 27, 2010.
The museum is rich in exhibits, and is especially pleasing to the youngest visitors. At our Museum, children can see and learn interesting details about fossils that are nearly 2 billion years old. Specially made reconstructions of Neanderthals particularly delight the youngest, as well as the touchable meteorites.
The museum also has a specially designed educational program. Children can enjoy sightseeing and learn many interesting and valuable details from the history of the human race. In addition, educational material traces the evolution and influences from space that have directly affected our development and the society we know today.
