The Zadar National Museum is located in four different locations:

The Zadar City Museum was founded on January 1, 1960 as an independent legal entity. After that, in December 1962, it was integrated into the National Museum of Zadar under the name of the Department of Culture and History. Subsequent political events (with the creation of the independent Republic of Croatia) lead to the reorganization of the National Museum, when two departments, the Cultural-History Department and the Department of the Labor Movement, the National Liberation Movement and Socialist Construction (abbreviated as the Revolution Department), merge into the Museum of the City of Zadar.
This museum is located in the building that until Napoleon was the wing of the monastery of St. Krševan, later converted to Lyceum, and then to a public school and economic college.
In 1945, the National Museum was established, originally consisting of the Ethnographic and Natural History Department. The initial collection of the Ethnographic Department consisted of about 200 different objects (textiles, jewelry, weapons and wooden objects), ie the collection of Dušan Jurković. Dusan Jankovic was a lawyer, who was also the first director of the National Museum. The museum was housed in a private villa in the Brodarica area, and today it is located on the Zadar National Square.
The very location of this ward (Rector's Palace) is a 13th century cultural monument. In the foundations of this building, archaeological excavations revealed many parts of the building from the Roman and Late Antique periods. The palace covers an area of 2000 square meters, and for decades has served to maintain a number of cultural facilities and institutions, among which we can distinguish: the City Library, the Blagoje Bersa Music and Ballet School, the Concert Hall, and many others.
With the renovation of the palace after the end of 2016, we got a modernly equipped cultural complex and a new tourist attraction that combines museum space, temporary exhibition halls, representative halls decorated in different historical styles, video gallery, concert and multimedia hall.
The Art Gallery was established on October 10, 1948 (after World War II). Since its founding, the Art Gallery has been an independent institution until 1963. This is the first institution of its kind in Zadar. The institution deals with the collection, preservation and presentation of artistic material. the largest holdings are from the 20th century.
The fundus initially numbered only 80 works, but has grown through various acquisitions and donations to 1,700 works of art. Today is an imposing number of works of art, which you can see in the Art Gallery. We also need to add valuable negatives of Ante Brkan's photojournalistic oeuvre to the artistic paintings fund - there are about 30,000 of them.
