The Croatian Museum of Tourism is located in a 170-year-old villa, in the heart of Opatija's Angiolina Park. The Museum tells the history of tourism in Croatia, but also the impact of tourism on all of us, in the modern age we live in. The museum reflects the change in our cities, and our changes in the way we travel and welcome travelers.
Tourism can be defined as a meeting of different cultures, and each meeting creates something new. The Museum also works with this slogan, so it aims to explore - through its projects, exhibitions, roundtables, traveling exhibitions and workshops.
The Croatian Museum of Tourism is not an isolated and independent institution that functions as such. Specifically, the operation and description of the museum make up your own personal stories and experiences. Whether you are a traveler, a host, a resident of a tourist destination, a tourist worker, or just planning your life's journey, you can contribute to the story of this museum and its existence.
The history of the museum, its vision and mission
The Croatian Museum of Tourism has the status of a specialized museum institution operating at the national level, collecting, preserving, researching and presenting the tangible and intangible heritage of tourism content.
The museum was founded by the City of Opatija and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, and its decree was adopted on September 7, 2007. Today the museum has three buildings at its disposal: Villa Angiolina, Swiss House and Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion.
Villa Angiolina is also the oldest villa in Opatija, located in the central park of Opatija. The villa has a Museum headquarters and a space for museum exhibitions. Not far from the villa is the "Swiss House", which houses the permanent exhibition "Greetings from Opatija". At the Juraj Šporer Art Pavilion, museum staff are setting up art exhibitions.
The Croatian Museum of Tourism can be described as an open, modern institution that encourages and encourages citizens to participate creatively and critically, and artists, intellectuals and others to projects that they can present in this museum. It is the desire of the museum's leading people to define the institution as educational, by asking questions and proposing research answers. The museum should offer children a space to learn in a fun way. It is also the wish of the museum staff that the Museum cooperate with other institutions, artists and individuals from all over Croatia and abroad. The goal is to collaborate in a way that presents joint projects that question the relationship between tourism and culture and the local community, even today. Particular emphasis is placed on analyzing the good and bad trends of this interaction.
The mission of the museum is worth mentioning: collecting tangible and intangible materials from the tourist history of Opatija and Croatia, updating the collected history today through exhibitions, workshops, round tables and research work that open up new perspectives on the interaction of tourism. It is important to get one roundtable story of local communities, cultural details, all with a view to better understanding social relationships and trends.
