A relatively long history preceded the founding of our museum. The founding of the Pazin City Museum began in 1952, when the Society for the History and Cultural Affairs of Istria in Pazin began collecting material for the future museum. At the same time, an action was initiated for the adaptation of Kastela for a museum function.
Three years later, in 1955, the Pazin National Museum was founded. He first exhibited borrowed material, and the following year, by the decision of the National Committee of Pazin Municipality, the Pazin City Museum was established, which, among other functions, was tasked with collecting, preserving and displaying items of historical value to citizens.
As we can see from the documentation, already in 1957, preparations began for the establishment of the National Museum. At the time, the Museum had the following collections, namely departments: the Department of the People's Revolution, Ethnography, the Archaeological Collection, the Collection of Old Paintings, and the Collection of Old Weapons.
The People's Committee of Pazin Municipality, in 1960, issued a decision establishing an independent institution - the Pazin National Museum, which will have the task of collecting, preserving, expertly processing and exhibiting objects and materials from national life and customs. In addition, the museum is tasked with bringing all other areas of cultural history and the people's revolution closer to the public. With this decision, the Museum was granted the management and use of Kastela, which was registered in the Register of Cultural Monuments that same year.
With the new decision from 1962, the National Museum in Pazin, up to then, continued its work as the Ethnographic Museum of Istria. The Ethnographic Museum of Istria, among other things, was tasked with systematically collecting, preserving, arranging and exhibiting objects in the field of cultural history, the National Revolution and socialist construction in the Pazin municipality. In accordance with this decision, the development of the Native Collection, to which the cultural and historical material from the holdings of the former National Museum, was also planned.
Since 1982, the Native Collection has been gradually enriched by funding from the Pazin Municipality.
Gallery Collection Fund founded in 1969, with space for permanent exhibition in Motovun. To the greatest extent, this fund was increased by works of art that were realized at the international Fine Arts Meetings held from 1972 to 1984, which was also funded by the Municipality of Pazin.
The Cultural-Historical and Gallery Collection of 1996 established the Museum of the City of Pazin, which has the status of "affiliates of the National University of Pazin", later the Open University. The museum was opened in 1997 and has been operating as an independent institution since 2008.
The area of activity of the Museum is Pazin and Pazin, in particular - central Istria. The task of the institution is to collect and preserve, exhibit, professionally and scientifically process and publish the cultural, historical and artistic heritage of central Istria, as well as the gallery business.
Since the beginning of the work of the Pazin City Museum (1997), the museum's holdings have increased significantly, and three departments have been established: a historical and cultural-historical department within which several collections and a gallery department with works of contemporary art production have been established.
The Pazin City Museum still handles space and transportation. The profiling of collections, collecting material as well as other professional museum activities is carried out according to the adopted document of museological and spatial conception, and is mostly focused on enriching the holdings. In addition, the museum staff is making great efforts to create the conditions for the permanent display.
